Lighthouse Beach in Pula: Swim Beside a Landmark from 1877
At the far edge of Verudela, landscaped promenades give way to a rockier and wilder Adriatic shoreline. Here, only 15 metres from Arena Verudela Beach, one of Pula’s most atmospheric swimming spots lies beneath a working historic lighthouse.
Lighthouse Beach is not the easiest beach on Verudela to enter, and that is part of its appeal.
A Lighthouse Watching the Coast Since 1877
The Cape Verudica lighthouse was built in 1877. Its stone tower rises eight metres above the cape and, although no lighthouse keeper lives there today, its light continues to flash every three seconds, reaching six nautical miles across the sea.
The cape also has its own local legend. Emperor Vespasian is said to have owed money to the builders of Pula’s Roman amphitheatre. According to the story, gold coins were buried on the shore in front of the lighthouse so that the builders’ descendants could one day find them. Whether treasure still lies beneath Verudela’s rocks remains a mystery, but the story gives this coastline another fascinating layer.

Unlike Verudela’s gentler pebble coves, Lighthouse Beach offers rocky sunbathing spots, uninterrupted views of the open Adriatic and a more adventurous atmosphere. It is best suited to adults, confident swimmers and visitors who enjoy the untamed side of the coast.
The rocky entrance can be difficult, so footwear with good grip is recommended. During strong jugo winds, the sea becomes particularly rough and swimming may be prohibited. Always follow the warnings displayed at the beach.
