Spend the night surrounded by art

Every art’otel is dedicated to a signature artist, turning the hotel into a gallery guests live in. At art’otel Berlin Mitte it is Georg Baselitz, one of the most influential figures in contemporary German art. More than 300 original paintings, prints and charcoal works hang in the guest rooms, corridors and public spaces, from large, vivid canvases to small, sober charcoal drawings.

Why is everything upside down?

Baselitz is famous for turning figures and other subjects upside down. By inverting familiar images, he asks viewers to focus on colour, form and composition rather than simply identifying the subject. The idea runs through the hotel and gives the Upside Down Bar & Restaurant its name. Surrounded by original artworks, guests can enjoy international and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, cocktails and European wines.

Where contemporary design meets historic Berlin

Part of the hotel is the listed Ermelerhaus, one of Berlin’s notable Baroque and Rococo buildings. It was originally built in 1567, remodelled as a Rococo palace in the 18th century, and became a cultural meeting place after tobacco merchant Ferdinand-Wilhelm Ermeler acquired it in 1824. The building was dismantled in the 1960s and rebuilt at its current location.

Today richly decorated Rococo rooms and ceiling paintings sit beside bold colour, clean contemporary lines and provocative modern art.

Rooms, spa and facilities

The hotel has 109 rooms and suites, each combining contemporary comfort with individual Baselitz works. Courtyard rooms are quieter; selected suites add living space and rooftop views. The spa and gym in the historic Ermelerhaus offers a Finnish sauna, two treatment rooms, a relaxation area and Technogym equipment. Family rooms, soundproofed rooms and air conditioning are available.

Explore Berlin’s cultural heart

Museum Island, Alexanderplatz, Berlin Cathedral, Gendarmenmarkt and the Nikolaiviertel are all within easy reach, and the Märkisches Museum underground station opposite connects you to the rest of the city. The River Spree and Berlin’s historic harbour are just outside, ideal for a walk or a boat trip.
