HISTORY
In the millennial past of Barban, events changed with such speed that not even history managed to record everything, but that's why one could not be missed by the chroniclers. Not because it would be more significant than the others - but for the simple reason that it is the "Race to the Ring". It outlived the framework of historical knight games, and guided by the enormous vitality and occasional inspiration of historical companions, it "ran" from the end of the seventeenth to the end of the twentieth century. In this historical sequence, we record the year 1696, which is the oldest record of the Race.
It is a "hidden seed", germinated after 280 years. On the path that leads from the center of Barban towards Gradišće, every touch of spear and ring was a ringing in honor of a renewed tradition. Those "Barban bells" would not be ringing so loudly today if it were not for Dr. Danilo Klen, a historian who researched and published data on the first ring races. Barbanac, prof. Mario Kalčić published these scientific researches, and they found fertile ground in Barban. According to this data, students from Istria, gathered in the "Mate Balota" club in Zagreb, members of the Barban sports club, in cooperation with Barban activists and the Chair of the Čakavian Assembly, reconstructed the "Race to the Ring" and presented it on August 14, 1976 at "Istria". . Since then, it has been held every year on the penultimate weekend in August.
